Long Island reached the top of its popularity in the early 1980s. There are a lot of stories about its origin and among these the most credited one attributes its creation to Robert Butt, also called “Rosebud”. He was the bartender of the Oak Beach Inn in Long Island - New York - and in 1972 he invented the famous drink in occasion of a cocktail contest. A second version claims that the cocktail was invented in the period of prohibition in order to mask the drink as a soft drink, as it looked a lot like iced tea.
